Dash cam

A dash cam records the road while you drive. After an accident, video of what really happened can settle a dispute that would otherwise be your word against theirs. What to look for:

  • Front-and-rear recording if you want rear-end collisions covered.
  • Good night video: look at sample footage, not just the resolution number.
  • Loop recording and a G-sensor that locks the clip when there's an impact.
  • Parking mode if you want it to watch the car while it's parked. This usually needs a hardwire kit.
  • A high-endurance microSD card, because ordinary cards wear out with constant recording.

Mount it where it does not block your view, and check your state's rules on windshield-mounted devices.

OBD2 code reader

Every car sold in the U.S. since the 1996 model year has an OBD2 port, usually under the dashboard near the steering column. A code reader plugs in and tells you why the check engine light is on. It's one of the cheapest ways to avoid paying just to find out what's wrong. See our repair guide for what to do next.

Detailing supplies

A pH-balanced car wash soap (not dish soap, which strips wax), microfiber towels, and a wax or spray sealant a few times a year protect the paint and help resale value. Clean the interior and protect the dashboard from sun to keep plastics from cracking.

Roadside emergency kit

  • Jumper cables or a portable jump starter
  • Tire inflator and a tire pressure gauge
  • Flashlight or headlamp, with spare batteries
  • Reflective triangles or flares
  • First-aid kit, water and a blanket
  • Phone charger or power bank
  • Ice scraper and small shovel in snowy areas
  • Your roadside assistance card

Frequently asked questions

Are dash cams legal?

Dash cams are legal to use across the U.S., but some states limit what can be mounted on the windshield and where. Audio recording of passengers can also be subject to consent laws. Check your state's rules.

Where is the OBD2 port?

On most cars it is under the dashboard on the driver's side, near the steering column. Your owner's manual shows the exact spot.

Does a dash cam lower my insurance?

Generally not directly, but footage can help prove fault after an accident, which can protect you from a claim and a rate increase.
